The president of the Lebanese Parliament, Nabih Berri, called on Wednesday for the definitive consolidation of the ceasefire and the immediate withdrawal of Israeli forces from occupied areas in the south of the country. The parliamentary leader conditioned the start of the national recovery on the deployment of the Lebanese Army and the safe return of civilians to the border areas.
The demand was made during a telephone conversation with the President of France, Emmanuel Macron. In the exchange, the French president reaffirmed his nation's support for Lebanese sovereignty and expressed Paris's willingness to organize international financial support conferences aimed at armed forces and reconstruction.
Berri stressed that the November 2024 pact, together with the new memorandum of understanding signed on June 18 between the United States and Iran in Switzerland, constitutes a key opportunity to stop hostilities. These diplomatic mechanisms seek to guarantee the cessation of fighting on different fronts and respect for the territorial integrity of the Arab nation.
Despite political efforts, local authorities reported recent Israeli attacks that claimed the lives of two civilians in Nabatieh al-Fawqa. Faced with this situation, the Secretary General of Hezbollah, Naim Qassem, insisted that the withdrawal of the occupying troops must be carried out under a strictly defined schedule that stops operations by air, land and sea.
The Israeli military offensive that began on March 2 has caused the death of 4,192 people, leaving more than 12,000 injured and one million displaced within the territory. United Nations reports estimate direct material damage at more than 1,380 million dollars, reflected in the massive destruction of housing infrastructure in southern Lebanon.
