Magnitude 6 earthquake is recorded in a Peruvian department bordering Ecuador

A magnitude 6 earthquake was recorded on Tuesday in the Peruvian province of Zarumilla, located in the department of Tumbes (north, bordering Ecuador), the Geophysical Institute of Peru (IGP) reported “Seismic report.

Date: October 22, 2025. Time: 19.05 (00.05 GMT). Magnitude: 6.0. Depth: 70 kilometers. Reference: 36 kilometers southeast of Zarumilla, province of Zarumilla, department of Tumbes,” said the IGP through its X account released by the Sputnik news agency.

For its part, the National Institute of Civil Defense (INDEX) noted that the earthquake had its epicenter in southern Ecuador and “was perceived as moderate to strong” by the population of Tumbes. INDECI did not report material or human damage, although it is monitoring the area.

He also urged the population to take preventive measures in the face of the earthquake, such as having a family emergency plan, having an emergency backpack handy, staying in areas free of landslides, among others.
