The Taiwan Meteorological Agency reported that at 11:05 p.m., an earthquake of magnitude 7.0 was recorded with an epicenter in the sea off the coast of Yilan County, 73 kilometers deep.
Yilan firefighters confirmed that, so far, there have been no casualties or material damage, International Media reported.
The earthquake was felt all over the island and caused oscillations in buildings in Taipei, according to local media. Taiwan, located on the border of tectonic plates within the Pacific Fire Belt, is an area of high seismic activity, according to the United States Geological Survey.
In recent days, a magnitude 6.0 earthquake shook the south-east of the territory. In April 2024, a 7.4 magnitude earthquake caused 17 victims and serious damage in Hualien.
The authorities highlighted that this was the strongest earthquake recorded in the last 25 years, comparable only to the 7.6 magnitude earthquake that occurred in 1999, considered the deadliest natural disaster in the island's history.
