At the age of 82 in the city of Beijing, the Chinese revolutionary leader and statesman Mao Zedong or Mao Tse-Tung died on September 9, 1976.
Zedong was the founder of the People's Republic of China and considered by most to be one of the influential figures of the 20th century.
During the Revolution of 1911, he was a soldier in the revolutionary army, which eventually defeated the Qing dynasty. After serving in the army, he resumed his studies and moved to Beijing, where he studied Marxist social and political thought.
After understanding leftist thinking, Mao understood that China's millions of peasants would be the key to change. During the long civil war with Chiang Kai-shek and his nationalist government, he broke enemy lines and led his followers on the Long March, a walk of about 6,000 kilometers to northern China.
From there he built his Red Army and fought against the Japanese invaders. On October 1, 1949, Mao proclaimed the founding of the People's Republic of China (PRC).
His embalmed remains are found in a mausoleum in Beijing's Tiananmen Square.
