The Mayor of Caracas, Carmen Meléndez, stated that on April 19, 1810, 215 years ago, the flare that reached South America to liberate nations ignited in Caracas.
From the Santa Rosa de Lima Chapel, in the capital city, where a solemn session was held to commemorate 215 years since the Proclamation of Venezuelan Independence, Meléndez assured that Venezuelan youth played a fundamental role on April 19, 1810, the day our nation took its first step towards Independence.
“Those rebellious youth, rebellious people, ordinary, courageous people, who at that time said they did not want to continue under the command of the Spanish Empire, are the same people who are rising up today and confronting the North American empire,” Meléndez said.
The mayor asserted that February and April are historic in Venezuela. “We have always been fighting, the battles and we have been victorious,” he added
“From April 19, 1810 until now, April 19, 2025, we can say that we have undergone great transformations, with Popular Power, with the Communes, with the People in the street working with their own hands and taking a different path, a new governance,” he said.
Earlier, the mayor of Caracas, Carmen Meléndez, together with the head of Government of the Capital District, Nahun Fernández, and prominent personalities led the wreath before the Equestrian Statue of the Liberator Simon Bolivar, in Plaza Bolívar in Caracas.
