A group of 37 members of the European Parliament signed and distributed a joint letter demanding the immediate suspension of the Association Agreement between the European Union (EU) and Israel, following the military interception of the Sumud Global Flotilla in the Mediterranean Sea.
Legislators argued that the Government of Tel Aviv openly and repeatedly violates the binding human rights obligations contemplated in the said convention, warning that Brussels' inaction makes the community bloc an accomplice to impunity in the region.
The parliamentary statement denounced that the Israeli naval forces acted with extreme violence during the approach carried out in international waters, where 428 aid workers and civilian humanitarian workers were detained transporting assistance to the Gaza Strip.
The signatories substantiated the urgency of breaking business ties after collecting documented testimonies from previous missions that evidenced severe physical abuse, ill-treatment and violence against volunteers who remained in the custody of the occupying forces.
Given the seriousness of the naval assault, MEPs formally demanded the opening of an independent international investigation to clarify the situation of the activists and evaluate the block's institutional responses.
At the same time, several parliamentary voices, including the Spanish MEP Irene Montero, harshly questioned the head of diplomacy of the European Union, Kaja Kallas, reproaching the passivity and permissiveness of the European authorities in the face of the kidnapping of civilian vessels and the detention of citizens of the member States.
The demand of European legislators was supported by the United Nations (UN) Special Rapporteur for the Occupied Palestinian Territories, Francesca Albanese, who directly held Western powers responsible for operating as political and logistical facilitators of the Tel Aviv incursions.
The UN official issued a high alert after confirming the retention of the vessels of the humanitarian flotilla, stating that the excessive concessions granted to Israel allow the continuation of a scheme of segregation and cross-border violence against the civilian population.
