On July 9, 1935, the singer-songwriter Mercedes Sosa was born in the province of Tucumán, Argentina, who with her powerful voice and loving soul, bequeathed beautiful songs of struggle and love for the human being to the world.

Descended from Calchaqui, French and Spanish, the “Negra Mercedes” began singing at a time when the tango of Buenos Aires was being achieved in popularity due to folk music, a phenomenon that is known as the folklore boom.

On February 11, 1963, from the Mendoza Journalists Circle, she launched the New Songbook Movement, together with her husband (Oscar Matus), Armando Tejada Gómez, Tito Francia and other artists, which would manifest itself internationally as the New Song Movement.

Among the best-known interpretations of La Negra are several songs by Chilean Violeta Parra, to whom she always professed admiration for the beauty and feeling she gave to lyrics such as “Gracias a la Vida”.

The physical departure of this wonderful interpreter, whose strength of interpretation continues to be admired by artists around the world, took place on October 4, 2009, in the city of Buenos Aires and her remains were veiled at the National Congress of Argentina, where personalities and that people who always saw in this singer, the voice of their rebellion, love and protest attended.
