In Mexico, the Secretariat of the Navy (SEMAR), acting as the Coast Guard, announced the start of a search and rescue operation to locate the Friendship and Tigger Moth sailboats. Both vessels, which are part of the “Our America” humanitarian flotilla, lost contact after setting sail from Isla Mujeres to Havana.
Nine crew members are on board the vessels whose whereabouts have been unknown since the middle of this week, when they were due to arrive in the Cuban capital. So far, the communication systems of the sailboats have not emitted distress signals, but the total loss of radio and satellite contact has been confirmed.
Faced with the situation, the Mexican Navy has activated international collaboration protocols, maintaining constant communication with rescue centers in Poland, France, Cuba and the United States.
In addition, alerts have been issued to all naval commanders in the region and to search and rescue stations (ENSAR) to intensify monitoring in the Yucatan Canal and adjacent areas.
The flotilla, made up of activists of various nationalities, transports basic supplies and food to mitigate the energy and supply crisis affecting the island. SEMAR will continue its search efforts to ensure the safety of the crew members.
