The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Mexico, Alicia Bárcena, said that the United Nations Security Council (UN) requires urgent reform

Mexico proposes the elimination of the veto in its entirety and as long as that is not achieved, at least its limitation in cases of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes,” he stressed during his participation in the 79th General Assembly of the United Nations (UN).

Bárcena noted that he is experiencing increasing and diverse threats to international peace and security, violations of the principles of the UN Charter and growing risks of nuclear war.

“Faced with these scenarios, we defend territorial integrity in all geographical contexts, including Ukraine and Palestine. We advocate for a political solution and negotiations that include both sides: Russia and Ukraine,” he emphasized.

He thanked the international community for the widespread condemnation of the current Government of Ecuador for the illegal and violent assault against the Embassy of Mexico in Quito, which violated the principles of the UN Charter. “We can't forget or normalize it,” he said.
