The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, ruled out that the tragic shooting at the Teotihuacán Pyramids represents an attempt to destabilize her administration, attributing the event to the attacker's mental health.
During her press conference, the president specified that, according to preliminary investigations, the suspect had psychological disorders and was influenced by episodes of violence that occurred abroad. Sheinbaum emphasized that this is an unprecedented event in the country's archaeological sites, calling it an isolated event: “This is the first time this has happened,” he said.
The incident occurred this Monday when a 27-year-old man, identified as Julio César Jasso Ramírez, climbed the Pyramid of the Sun and opened fire indiscriminately against visitors.
After the attack, the shooter committed suicide when he was cornered by National Guard officers, who managed to injure him in the leg before the outcome. The toll of this tragedy amounts to a deceased Canadian tourist and 13 injured people of various nationalities, including citizens of the Russian Federation, the United States, Colombia and Brazil; of whom seven remain hospitalized, even if out of danger.
Given the seriousness of the event, the head of state announced that the Federal Government will immediately reinforce surveillance protocols in the most important historic sites of the Aztec nation.
The president explained that, previously, these venues did not have security arches because there had been no previous episodes of violence; however, from now on, a more rigorous review will be implemented to guarantee the integrity of the millions of domestic and foreign tourists who visit these cultural heritage centers annually.
“There is no need to speculate, the most important thing is information based on the rigorous investigation of prosecutors,” he said, assuring that the Mexican State will act firmly to prevent similar events from happening again. With these measures, the Executive seeks to preserve the image of Mexico as a safe destination, while expert work continues to clarify the final details of the attack.
