The Government of Javier Milei sent to Congress a draft reform of Argentina's Juvenile Criminal Regime, which provides for the reduction of the age of punishment from 16 to 13.

“The government's initiative does not improve any of the problems faced by the juvenile criminal justice system today. Nowadays, an adolescent who goes through the criminal justice system is scarred and his reintegration into society is very difficult. The proposal does not provide for any support or forms of reintegration to prevent conflicting behaviors. Nor does it provide strategies to prevent recidivism,” said the Council for Legal and Social Studies (CELS) of the South American country.

In this regard, CELS warned that confinement in poor conditions, with isolation as a rule and without contact with loved ones or access to school, makes these detention centers spaces where violent practices are reproduced.

It is ironic that there is an international campaign against the Venezuelan Government for supposedly imprisoning children, while in other countries where these attacks come from they seek to lower the age of imprisonment.
