The recent measurement of the Government Trust Index, prepared by the Torcuato Di Tella University, reveals a downward trend in the assessment of President Javier Milei's management, registering 1.99 points during the month of May. This result marks the sixth consecutive decline since the beginning of his administration, placing approval levels at their most critical point to date and evidencing growing discontent among large sectors of the Argentine population.
Analysts point out that this wear and tear in the Executive's image is mainly due to the implementation of economic policies that have resulted in a context of job loss and a marked drop in household consumption. The situation is aggravated by the direct impact faced by small and medium-sized enterprises, together with the social discontent expressed in recent sectoral demonstrations, including protests over the defunding of the public university system.
In contrast, the electoral board is beginning to show a shift in the preferences of the electorate towards the figure of the governor of the province of Buenos Aires, Axel Kicillof.
According to data from the consultancy firm CEOP Latam, the president of Buenos Aires has managed to consolidate a sustained rise, capturing not only his historic electoral base, but also an important segment of independent voters who were previously undecided or distant.
Looking ahead to the next electoral process, the polls project a scenario of marked polarization between the two leaders, where Kicillof is currently ahead of Milei in the general vote projections.
While the ruling party's support base seems to have found a structural ceiling concentrated on the spectrum of the right, the opposition seeks to consolidate a block that integrates sectors of the center and the left to capitalize on social unrest in the face of the current economic model.
