The Ministry of Popular Power for Science and Technology (MINCYT) develops strategies to safeguard, disseminate and analyze fossils found in Venezuelan territory, as part of strengthening the National System of Science, Technology and Innovation.

In the state of Táchira, local researchers successfully identified the remains of an ichthyosaur and a Cretaceous fish, which are approximately 100 million years old. This discovery represents the first of its kind in the state.

The expedition took place in the areas of La Grita and Lobatera, where species such as Tachiraptor and Laquintasaura had already been discovered. These species, according to geoscientist Rodolfo Sánchez, are considered to be the oldest dinosaurs in northern South America.
