Minister Gabriela Jiménez: Venezuela began a pilot study on the incidence of Alzheimer's

The sector vice-president of Science, Technology and Health, Gabriela Jiménez, reported on the initiation of a pilot study on the incidence of Alzheimer's in Venezuela.
During his speech, in the 71st edition of the program “With Maduro+”, he explained that the laboratory developed in the field of Biochemistry and Biophysics of the Venezuelan Institute for Scientific Research (IVIC) will become a crucial space for the research of neurological diseases, focusing efforts on Alzheimer's.
He specified that “70% of patients are women, they are grandmothers”, and explained that this condition is “conditioned by behavior with hormones, how a woman's brain behaves and a genetic condition”.
She also explained that approximately in more than 7.1% of the population are women over 50 years of age and 3% of the male population over 55 years of age.
“This trend has allowed us to generate a recommendation agenda in neuroscience, focusing on the urgent need to address this disease,” he said.
In addition, he stressed that “the diagnosis occurs late by invasive and extremely expensive methods”, which highlights the need for a more accessible and earlier intervention.
Jiménez proposed “building a dedicated mental health protocol, from Venezuela, for Alzheimer's”, that includes an early diagnosis and support for families, who play a fundamental role in patient care.
On the other hand, he added the achievements achieved in the scientific agenda for the year 2024, which was enshrined with “720 research projects that you promoted”.
He specified that 50% of these projects correspond to research, development and innovation agendas.
He also called on the population to “take care of ourselves in healthy habits”, stressing the importance of prevention and early detection in the fight against this disease.
