Ministry of Health began training in epidemic intelligence with PAHO

The Ministry of Popular Power for Health (MPPS), in conjunction with the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), began the third working session on the implementation of the Venezuelan model of epidemic intelligence, with the objective of consolidating a National Center for Event Detection.
The MPPS, on its account of the social network Instagram, explained that it seeks this center to guarantee a timely response and protect the health of the population, according to a press release from the ministry.
A technical team from the German National Institute of Public Health (Robert Koch Institute) participated in the activity to consolidate advanced tools for early detection and effective response to health emergencies in the country.
The general director of Epidemiology, José Manuel García, said that “this effort seeks to unify the working criteria of the various areas of the ministry linked to health surveillance, such as Environmental Health, Outpatient Network, Community Network, Community Participation and the National Institute of Hygiene.”
In addition, he specified that the strategy contemplates the comprehensive use of official data sources and open source mechanisms, “including digital media and social networks, to increase the sensitivity of the system in identifying outbreaks, alerts or epidemics.”
For his part, the leader of the Public Health Intelligence group at the Robert Koch Institute and facilitator of the workshop, Carlos Correa Martínez, added that this methodology reorders existing analytical capacities “to articulate information in a more agile way”.
“The initiative seeks to respond precisely to the current challenges of the sector, including those derived from the situation caused by the earthquakes of June 24, 2026, as well as to strengthen surveillance structures in the medium and long term,” he said.
Correa noted that the training process will continue in its next phases with the integration of other ministries and national institutions.
