After a cycle of 672 territorial assemblies across the country, the national congress of the university sector was held this Friday, in the context of the constituent process of social movements.

159,562 people from all areas of the university sector participated in the process.

From Simón Bolívar University, in Sartenejas, Miranda state, the sectoral vice-president for Social and Territorial Socialism, Héctor Rodríguez, asked this constituent congress to be “fully aware” of what is being played in the world today and of what is the role of the university in that struggle, to “assume full leadership from the classroom”.

“Today, war is won more in university research than on the battlefield, the economy is won more in laboratories than in factories, and the battle for ideas, for values, the cognitive battle, is won more in mathematics laboratories than in popular assemblies,” he argued.

In this regard, according to a press release, Rodríguez warned the university sector not to believe that its role in society is to “fill classrooms, guarantee university enrollment and give degrees to young people.” This is a “tiny” part of the task for the current situation, he added, accompanied by the Minister of University Education, Ricardo Sánchez.
