More than 2,000 producers will be registered in Miranda within the framework of the National Plan for the Characterization of the Cattle Herd

More than two thousand agricultural producers of cattle, buffalo, goats, pigs and poultry will be registered in the state of Miranda starting August 24, when a contingent of 251 pollsters will be deployed in the 21 municipalities of the entity, the Government of the entity reported on its website.

The announcement was announced during the installation of the regional General Agricultural Staff in the Caucagua parish, Acevedo municipality, an instance created to promote agricultural activity, define the road map for health monitoring and execute a work schedule that will run from August to December within the framework of the National Plan for the Characterization of the Cattle Herd.

The Secretary General of the Government of Miranda, Luis García, urged local authorities to follow up directly on the field operation. “Every mayor is called to monitor this mobilization that will allow us to know what we have, and in this way we can join forces to fight against foot-and-mouth disease and thus raise our production levels,” he said.

According to the official statistics presented during the activity, Miranda counts a herd of 23,943 cattle, of which 20,286 have already been immunized, representing a vaccination coverage of 84.73%.

It was also confirmed that the Barlovento axis is positioned as the entity's main livestock engine, concentrating more than 13,200 head of cattle in its five main municipalities.

The head of the Ministry of Popular Power for Productive Agriculture and Lands (MPPAPT), Nazareth Serrano, asserted that, according to the 2015 census, Venezuela is positioned as one of the countries in America with high quality in terms of buffalo and cattle products, due to animal genetics.

He added that the Bolivarian Government generates policies that benefit agricultural producers, while thanking the active participation of the Peasants' Councils and all the basic structures linked to meat production in the country.

The president of the Venezuelan Foundation for Animal Health Services (FUNVESSA), Guillermo Ávila, explained that the initial characterization is the first step in shaping the technical dossier that will be presented to the World Organization for Animal Health (WHO) and the Pan-American Center for Foot-and-Mouth Disease (PANAFTOSA), attached to PAHO, in order to achieve the declaration of a region free of foot-and-mouth disease.

Ávila explained that certification requires compliance with five requirements, such as: determining the exact quantity of the regional herd, guaranteeing at least four vaccination cycles that cover 95% of the animals, having specialized laboratories for the elimination of vesicular diseases, recording the commercial route and final destination of meat products and maintaining systematic monitoring of the health status of livestock.

In this regard, the authorities announced the projection of a new laboratory focused on the investigation of brucellosis and equine infectious anemia in the state.
