The rector of the National University of Sciences Dr. Humberto Fernández - Morán (UNC), Gabriela Jiménez, reported that the House of Study will expand the study program to 16 new careers in 2026, to meet the challenges imposed by the new global climate reality.

“In addition to the 13 new careers that President Nicolás Maduro guided us and that were approved at the OPSU, we now have three new careers that are added for 2026, which have to do with Environmental Sciences, Geosciences and a degree in Virology,” he said.

He specified that these careers respond to dynamics imposed by climate change, as well as to the experience experienced with the COVID-19 pandemic, a situation that calls on the national government to “strengthen our capacities in microbiology and virology”.

He added that the climate situation will also generate a “greater increase in diseases associated with infectious and zoonotic elements; how to understand this dynamic in a country as diverse as Venezuela, which, in addition, its tropical condition gives it peculiarities in terms of the disposal of microorganisms, vectors of diseases and which enhances the health system”.

In addition, he recalled that the UNC was born from the guidelines of President Maduro to transcend “from the classic Venezuelan university to a specialized space for the generation of technologies, of innovation.”

In the same way, he commented that among the careers most in demand by young Venezuelans is Artificial Intelligence Engineering. “52% of our students are oriented to artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, data science, robotics and automation,” he explained.

He added that, in addition, the UNC is part of the ecosystem of the Venezuelan Institute for Scientific Research (IVIC), which, to date, generates more than 400 research projects at the national level, being a great reference for the Latin American and Caribbean regions.

“The IVIC serves as an ecosystem for the university, 22 research centers that constitute the IVIC and a community of 1,500 science workers; by the month of October we expect about 2,500 students who are assigned by the National Income System, free of charge, to the public,” he said.
