The National Assembly of Nicaragua approved this Monday, November 25, the “Law for the Protection of Nicaraguans from External Sanctions and Aggressions”, a regulation that, according to the Government, seeks to defend the country's citizens and institutions against sanctions and aggressions from States, governments or foreign organizations.

In a review of the website of the Xinhua agency, he points out that the legislation, which declares the inapplicability of external sanctions, states in its fourth article that “sanctions imposed by States, groups of States, governments or foreign bodies that violate international law are declared null and void”.

It also emphasizes that these sanctions “have no validity and applicability throughout the national territory, regardless of their nature or scope”.

In addition, the regulations prohibit any entity or person, on the grounds of external sanctions, from “denying or suspending the provision of private and public goods and services, whether commercial or financial, to natural and legal persons, private entities and State institutions”.

The law also gives the Nicaraguan State the power to impose sanctions and fines on entities under its regulation that violate the rights of users and consumers by applying sanctions. Among the measures that may be taken against offenders are the temporary or definitive suspension of their operations, as stipulated in the national regulatory framework.

During the legislative session, Deputy Walmaro Gutierrez described the approval of the law as a milestone for national sovereignty.

“Write in gold letters some of the most beautiful pages dedicated to the sovereignty, independence and self-determination of our country,” he said.

Last Friday, November 22, the National Assembly approved in its first legislature a partial reform to the Political Constitution, which, according to the authorities, modernizes and updates the state framework to strengthen independence, sovereignty and the fight against poverty in Nicaragua.
