The North Korean leader, Kim Jong-un, signed a presidential decree ratifying the “Comprehensive Strategic Partnership” treaty between the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (the official name of North Korea) and the Russian Federation, the official North Korean news agency KCNA reported Tuesday.
According to information reported by Hispantv, the pact was sealed in June during the first official visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to Pyongyang in almost 25 years, where the head of state met with his counterpart Kim.
President Putin signed a law on Saturday that ratifies the treaty with North Korea. The treaty is expected to enter into force after the exchange of ratification documents.
The treaty states that, if one of the parties is the subject of an armed attack, the other undertakes to provide immediate military and other assistance, in accordance with Article 51 of the Charter of the United Nations.
According to the “Strategic Partnership”, the two countries have agreed to cooperate in the areas of food and energy security, information and communication technologies and health care. Cooperation will also be expanded in the areas of trade, economy, investment and science and technology.
