The number of internally displaced people globally reached a new record, exceeding 82 million at the end of 2025. According to a study by the Internal Displacement Observatory (IDMC), linked to the Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC), this phenomenon reflects an expanding humanitarian crisis that has seen its numbers escalate alarmingly in recent years.

The report highlights that the movement of people has doubled in just a decade. By 2016, the number of internally displaced persons amounted to 38.9 million, evidencing an accelerated growth driven by armed conflicts, persistent violence and the impact of natural disasters aggravated by climate change in various regions of the world.

This increase represents an unprecedented challenge for international organizations and national governments, who must manage the care of millions of people who remain within their own borders but outside their homes.

The IDMC calculations highlight the urgency of implementing conflict mitigation and resolution policies to curb this upward trend.

With these data, the observatory seeks to make visible the magnitude of a crisis that, although it occurs within national jurisdictions, has global repercussions in terms of stability and human development. The figure of 82 million people marks a historic milestone that highlights the vulnerability of civilian populations to contemporary crises.
