Women and men from communities from different states of the country are marching in Caracas to commemorate the 533rd anniversary of the Day of Indigenous Resistance.
Hector Páez described the mobilization as an expression of sovereignty and peace. “This is a march that Caracas is taking for peace and sovereignty. Today we tell the world that they will not be able to invade our land. We will resist gallantly, because we will win,” he said.
Páez also highlighted the historic role of Commander Hugo Chávez in vindicating indigenous rights, as well as the leadership of President Nicolás Maduro in defending the nation against external threats.
Alejandra Bermúdez expressed her message in which she rejected the international recognition of figures who, according to her, promoted military intervention in Venezuela. “Today we are marching against the Nobel Prize awarded to María Corina, a woman who has called for the intervention of our country. This is a resistance fight,” he said.
Luis González, from Delta Amacuro state, expressed his pride in representing the Guarao indigenous people and sharing his legacy with delegations from other states. “President Nicolás Maduro is fighting a great battle for peace in the face of the new colonization and the mechanisms of domination that seek our natural wealth. From indigenous peoples, we say to the world: we are in permanent resistance,” he said.
For her part, Carmen Jiménez, from Monagas state, emphasized the symbolic nature of the march: “We are here to defend the great homeland, the homeland of our Commander Hugo Chávez. This start is also a call to unity and commitment to life.”
