This Wednesday, the Union of Education Workers of Peru (SUTEP) began an indefinite strike with mobilizations in the regions of Arequipa, Tumbes, Ica and Loreto while it is expected that the measure of force will be extended to other regions of the country.

According to the teachers' union, the strike occurred due to the lack of response to the union's demands on the part of the Peruvian Government.

Educators are urgently demanding a better budget for the sector with an increase to each teacher of 500 soles per year (approximately 133 dollars). According to the union, this should apply to assistants, layoffs, promoters and retirees, as well as to teachers.

Hamer Villena Zúñiga, secretary of Sutep Arequipa, described the incident as a hit man and a sign of the failure of the state of emergency implemented by the Government in the face of extortion. He also asserted that the people are losing patience and that this could lead to a social outbreak.
