This Sunday, Peruvian citizens participated in an election day marked by historic fragmentation, with a record of 35 presidential candidates. According to current trends, it is confirmed that none of the candidates managed to achieve 50% of the votes needed to secure the presidency in the first round, which will force voters to return to the polls soon.
With 48% of the official vote, right-wing candidate Keiko Fujimori leads the results with 17% of the votes. He is closely followed by the ultraconservative Rafael López Aliaga with 15% and the centrist Jorge Nieto with 13%. However, the narrow percentage difference between the first places maintains a scenario of uncertainty as to who will be the two definitive candidates for the ballot.
The electoral process took place in a context of growing concern about insecurity and a political crisis that has affected institutional confidence in the country. Due to the dispersion of the vote among so many political options, the electoral landscape remains open, waiting for the advance of the official counting of the minutes to provide greater clarity on the final positions.
Although the polls opened at 7:00 a.m., the day was not without logistical setbacks and delays at various voting centers. Piero Corvetto, head of the National Office for Electoral Processes (ONPE), reported that these irregularities, mainly concentrated in the capital, prevented more than 63,000 people from exercising their right to vote.
