Venezuela receives the pleasant news that Blessed José Gregorio Hernández will be proclaimed a saint, as confirmed by Pope Francis in a statement published this Tuesday, February 25, 2025, after the audience granted at the Gemelli Polyclinic Hospital, where he is hospitalized.
The Pontiff approved the favorable votes of the Ordinary Session of the Cardinal Fathers and Bishops who are members of the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints for this canonization.
The pope convened a council to define the date of the canonization, according to information reported by the Vaticannews.
The Vatican highlighted that the legacy of the so-called Saint Gregory is deeply embedded in the Venezuelan people, and interest and devotion to his figure have grown in recent years in the Caribbean and the entire region.
José Gregorio Hernández Cisneros was born on October 26, 1864 in Isnotú, Trujillo state, and from an early age he demonstrated great intelligence as well as a deep vocation for service.
He graduated in medicine from the Central University of Venezuela and later specialized in Paris, France, an institution where he stood out for his professional excellence and social commitment.
José Gregorio died in Caracas in June 1919 after being hit by a car. In 2021 he was beatified and his funeral remains are found in the Church of Our Lady of Candlemas in Caracas.
