Pope Leo XIV began the rites of his first Holy Week as pontiff with the celebration of the Chrism Mass on Holy Thursday in St. Peter's Basilica, a ceremony in which he asked that the Christian mission move away from “arrogance” and “logic of domination”.
“It is a priority to remember that neither in the pastoral sphere, nor in the social and political sphere, can good come from arrogance,” said the supreme pontiff during his homily before thousands of faithful and the Roman clergy.
He added that “great missionaries are witnesses of careful approaches, whose method consists of sharing life, selfless service, the renouncement of any calculating strategy, dialogue and respect.”
The mass of this Holy Thursday, which is celebrated in all cathedrals in the world and marks the beginning of the Easter Triduum (central period of Holy Week), commemorates the institution of the sacrament of priestly order by Jesus Christ during the Last Supper and is dedicated to the renewal by priests of the vows of poverty, chastity and obedience.
