The President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro Moros, held a telephone conversation today with the Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres, to warn about the escalation of threats against Venezuela and their serious implications for regional peace.

During the call, the Head of State denounced to the Secretary General the recent public demonstrations by the President of the United States, Donald Trump, on a social network, in which he stated in an unacceptable way that oil, natural wealth and Venezuelan territory belonged to him. He pointed out that these expressions of open colonial character were supported by senior U.S. official Stephen Miller, who assured that the Venezuelan oil industry also belonged to them. President Maduro stressed that such statements must be categorically rejected by the United Nations system, as they constitute a direct threat to sovereignty, international law and peace.

President Maduro also exposed the political, diplomatic and economic siege against Venezuela, as well as the intensification of a campaign of falsehoods and military threats, which has included acts of modern piracy, such as the assault on a vessel carrying legitimately commercialized Venezuelan oil. He described these actions as part of a “diplomacy of barbarism”, alien to international coexistence, and reiterated Venezuela's will to defend dignified diplomacy, dialogue and peace.

For his part, Secretary General António Guterres reaffirmed his commitment to international law and the principles of the United Nations Charter. He expressed his solidarity with the Venezuelan people and stressed the need to avoid any escalation or confrontation, pointing out that an armed conflict in the region is unjustified and would be sterile, with serious consequences for regional stability and the zone of peace in Latin America and the Caribbean.

The Secretary-General informed that he will follow up on the situation and that he will accompany its approach in the Security Council, promoting de-escalation and always giving priority to diplomacy, dialogue and the peaceful resolution of disputes.
