The President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, celebrated Pope Francis' decision to approve the canonization of the 'doctor of the poor', Dr. José Gregorio Hernández, for which he congratulated the Catholic people for such an important event.
“I want to congratulate the people of Venezuela, their countrymen from Isnotú, from Trujillo, their neighbors from here in La Pastora (...) I want to congratulate all the Catholic people, the Christian people, all the noble people of Venezuela because we had been waiting a century for it to be recognized and done,” said the Head of State.
From the Miraflores Palace, during a meeting with the National Commission for Constitutional Reform, the Dignitary indicated that José Gregorio Hernández is “the Saint of the People of Venezuela, but also of many other places. José Gregorio is asked for, worshiped and believed in in Colombia, Panama, Ecuador, Peru, Chile, Argentina and beyond.”
He stressed that José Gregorio was, in addition, “a man of science, one of the creators of bacteriology in Venezuela, and a patriot. It summarizes truly impressive values, which impressed Venezuela at the beginning of the 20th century, which made him a moral and spiritual leader of the entire people of that Caracas, who were beginning to see peasant migration, a product of the oil model to large cities including the capital,” he recalled.
