This Sunday, October 5th, the President of the Republic , Nicolás Maduro, published a heartfelt message to join the celebration of National Salsa Day, which was declared in 2020 in honor of the birth of the father of salsa, Phidias Danilo Escalona.
“Today the Homeland dresses up its rhythm to celebrate National Salsa Day! We pay tribute to Phidias Danilo Escalona, the Venezuelan broadcaster who named this cultural phenomenon that transcends generations,” he said through his Telegram channel.
He recalled that this rhythm is “the most vibrant heritage in the Caribbean: Afro-Caribbean music with roots in guaguancó, guaracha and the sound of Cuba, Puerto Rico and Panama, which later merged with jazz to conquer the world. It's a divine gift, an expression of the Caribbean soul that beats in every neighborhood.”
He also emphasized the meaning of this rhythm for him, which represents the flavor and joy of Caribbean peoples. “Salsa is life, it's urban philosophy, humor, sadness, pain and joy. It is the pulse that rebuilds me spiritually and accompanies us every day. The lyrics, testimonies and anecdotes in the key of rumba are the spark that ignites memories and strengthens identities. May dancing and salsa never go out in the neighborhoods and in the hearts of Venezuela!” , he said.
