Through his Telegram channel, the President of the Republic, Nicolás Maduro, extended his congratulations to the Venezuelan Bárbara Palacios, who won the III IBSA 2024 World Chess Championship.

“Undoubtedly, we are the best at chess! On behalf of the country, I congratulate the new champion, Bárbara Palacios, when she won a historic and unprecedented triumph in the III IBSA World Chess Championship 2024, she competed with 13 countries in Petrovac - Montenegro, where our team demonstrated its first level. You are a national pride!” , said the Head of State this Monday on the social network.

In addition, the National President extended an embrace to the entire Venezuelan delegation “for putting the national tricolor at the top of the world.”

Palacios won the world title when she tied her ninth game against Finland's Ari Tonteri, and with 5/9 she was the best placed woman in the final standings, an unprecedented achievement for wine-red chess. The native of the state of Monagas was always ahead.

In this way, he managed to position himself in first place, above his closest stalker, the Finnish Temmu Ruohonen; and thus achieve the unprecedented championship for the Venezuelan nation. The World Cup was played under the Swiss system; so the title was defined under a points system that gave the Venezuelan the winner after being present in the corresponding nine rounds.
