From his telegram channel, the president of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro firmly
“That day, which aroused the
indignation and resistance of a courageous people, meant a
criminal blow that sought to wrest democracy and the rights of the Honduran people,” he wrote.
The Head of State added that to date “I was Commander Chávez's Chancellor, and that
Sunday we woke up suddenly to the news. From the outset,
popular resistance made itself felt in the streets; I think this is the most exemplary and longest known
day of popular resistance
against a dictatorship in the history of Latin America and the Caribbean.”
He added that “the lessons learned from the coup d'etat
are unforgettable: the courage,
intelligence and humor of our older brother “Mel” Zelaya in the most difficult moments.
Everything I learned from him during those days of
battle has been of great value in our own fight against
fascism (...) Our love and solidarity to President Xiomara
Castro, to President “Mel” Zelaya and to all the Honduran people.
We celebrate their resilience and the struggle they have sustained
over the years, a path that reaffirms our commitment to
change and justice in Latin America. Long live the people of Morazán!”
