The President of the People's Republic of China, Xi Jinping, reaffirmed his position on Taiwan's sovereignty during a strategic meeting with opposition leader Cheng Li-wun. The president expressed his “full conviction” that the union between the two peoples is an inevitable historical destiny that cannot be altered.
During the meeting, Xi warned that Beijing will not renounce the use of force to achieve the reintegration of the island, which he described as an inalienable part of Chinese territory. He stressed that the tendency towards the rapprochement of compatriots on both sides of the strait is an immutable reality of history.
For his part, Cheng Li-wun called for moderation and asked the Chinese leader to prioritize stable relations to “avoid a war” in the region. The Taiwanese leader proposed seeking formal mechanisms to guarantee peace and reduce current military tension.
Finally, Li-wun urged the parties to develop a systemic solution that would make the Taiwan Strait a global benchmark for peaceful conflict resolution. The meeting concluded with opposing views on the method, but with an open channel of dialogue between Beijing and the island opposition.
