This Thursday, the spokeswoman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, Maria Zakharova, said that the Kremlin does not threaten anyone with nuclear weapons, Sputnik said.
“Russia does not threaten anyone with nuclear weapons, and any statement to the contrary is nothing more than a deliberate anti-Russian lie. We apply the nuclear deterrence policy with the utmost seriousness and responsibility,” said Zakharova.
According to the diplomat, Russia is forced to warn about the risks of a direct military confrontation between nuclear powers and, with it, about its potentially serious consequences.
Moscow must direct certain warning signals for “aggressive statements and anti-Russian and extremely hostile actions by Western countries”, which continue to fuel confrontation in the context of the Ukrainian crisis.
“The policy of the Russian (nuclear) doctrine evolves, but it remains strictly defensive in nature and clearly indicates the exceptional circumstances in which Russia reserves the right to defend itself using nuclear weapons,” he emphasized.
Zakharova stated that Russia's official statements in this regard do not go beyond this policy and fully comply with the country's international obligations.
In this regard, the Federation considers nuclear weapons as a deterrent and their use an extreme measure, while state policy in the field of nuclear deterrence is “defensive” and aims to guarantee the protection of the country's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
