During a session of the Security Council dedicated to the situation in the Middle East, Russia's deputy representative to the United Nations (UN), Dmitri Polianski, blamed the lack of progress on Palestine as one of the factors that triggered the recent military escalation between Iran and Israel.

“The result of persistent neglect of the Palestinian problem was the twelve-day war that unfolded before our eyes, when two nuclear-weapon States attacked a non-nuclear-weapon State that is a party to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons. Russian assessments of the aggressive actions of West Jerusalem and Washington, which have been repeatedly expressed in the Security Council, remain relevant,” he said.

Polianski explained that his country and other nations had warned of the effects of leaving one of the oldest conflicts in the region without prolonged attention, which, in his opinion, led to the observed confrontation. He also criticized the reaction of some powers to the conflict, pointing out that no effective measures have been taken to prevent its expansion to other territories.

In turn, he recalled that the guidelines of Resolution 2334, which calls for the cessation of occupation actions by Israel in Palestinian areas, have not yet been specified, reports the TASS news agency.

The diplomat also questioned the recent operations carried out by international actors, describing as worrying the impact generated by the use of sophisticated weapons in a State that signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
