The Russian Federation strongly condemned the latest terrorist attacks in Syria, involving foreigners, including those from post-Soviet countries, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said.

“We strongly condemn this attack, led by terrorists recognized as such by the UN Security Council,” he said in the context of the attack by Hayat Tahrir al Sham (formerly the Nusra Front banned in Russia) in Syria.

Likewise, the diplomat pointed out that “among them there are many foreign fighters, including those from post-Soviet countries,” and added that “clearly, the so-called Ukrainian footprint cannot be ruled out either.”

Zakharova stressed that the fighters would not have taken such bold actions “without the incitement and full support of external forces that seek to provoke a new round of armed confrontation in Syria.”

On November 27, the terrorist organization Hayat Tahrir al Sham (formerly the Nusra Front, banned in Russia), together with several armed Syrian opposition groups, launched a full-scale offensive against the Government Army in the Syrian provinces of Aleppo and Idlib, for the first time since 2016.

Sputnik stressed that the solution to the conflict is sought on two platforms, that of Geneva, under the auspices of the United Nations (UN), and that of Astana, with the mediation of Iran, Russia and Turkey.
