In 2024, a total of 144 Venezuelan players have participated in the spring training of professional baseball teams that officially live in the big leagues of the United States and Canada. This list includes established players and those who are invited to seek a place on the rosters of one of these organizations.
Among the players who attract attention in the preseason are the so-called prospects that are in the development process and that some of them arrived preceded by million-dollar bonuses for these youth baseball players.
For the specialized sports newspaper Líder, gardener Jackson Chourio, infielder Luisángel Acuña, together with receivers Gabriel Moreno and Ethan Salas, are the ones with the highest expectations not only because of the category of “Millionaire Rookie” but also because of their performance in training camps this year.
Chourio of the Milwaukee Brewers, 20, could start the season with the big team after batting in 2023 .283 and recorded an on-base percentage (OPS) of .338, in addition to 22 home runs, 91 RBIs, 88 scored and 44 steals in 128 Double-A games in Biloxi and Triple A.
Luisángel Acuña, is another player from the Acuña dynasty, who from the Big Apple team will try to impose his conditions to settle down and start writing his history in this sport.
“He has served as a waiter in exhibition games and sounds like a good combination around second base with experienced Puerto Rican shortstop Francisco Lindor,” Líder reviews.
The 22-year-old Sabanero has pulverized the minors with a batting average of .289 with 34 homers, 213 RBIs, 297 scored with 158 stolen bases.
“Gabriel Moreno is coming off a great campaign with the Arizona Jingle Bells, the reigning champion of the National League. The 24-year-old from Larense is going to his third season in MLB.
Last year the receiver was 111 games behind the plate in which the pitchers had a collective ERA of 3.94, a notable difference with the "5.25 recorded with the other catchers of the team”.
On offense, Moreno averaged .284 with 7 home runs and 50 charters, and he was key for Arizona to reach the World Series, to the point that at 23 he became the youngest receiver to hit 4 home runs in the playoff.
Special mention goes to catcher Ethan Salas, 18, a San Diego Padres player, who places him in the top five best prospects for 2024.
