On July 25, 1778, General Santiago Mariño, a hero of independence and one of the best examples of Venezuelan militarism, was born on the island of Margarita.

He is considered the Liberator of the East and despite the differences he had with the Father of the Fatherland, Simon Bolivar, he never left the patriotic ranks.

He was the protagonist of a hectic political life that began in his youth and that led him to exile on several occasions; when he joined the militia at the age of 22, he was sent to the island of Trinidad as part of a commission of the Cumaná City Council. Once there, he began studies in English schools. Starting with the Chacachacare expedition, his military prowess catapulted him as a celebrity in the quest for independence.

He reached the rank of General in Chief of the Venezuelan Army in the War of Independence, and led the campaign that freed the Venezuelan East from realistic forces, in 1813, where he obtained the title of Liberator of the East.

He accompanied Liberator Simon Bolivar in the Battle of Carabobo as Chief of Staff. Until his death, he was associated with the militaristic and patriotic spirit that characterized him.

Today, 247 years after the birth of this distinguished fighter and faithful believer in freedom, the people raise the flags of this warrior to defend the sovereignty and independence to which Santiago Mariño dedicated himself with passion and courage to mark revolutionaries and anti-imperialists.
