The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, warned the interim president of Peru, José Jerí, that he would violate international law if he carried out his threat to invade the Mexican embassy in Lima. He recalled that a similar event occurred in Ecuador in April 2024.

Sheinbaum stressed that disputes must be resolved within the framework of international norms and reiterated that an intervention in a diplomatic headquarters violates the principles of sovereignty. He stressed that the Peruvian Government decided to break relations with Mexico after granting asylum to Betssy Chávez, former chief of staff of former President Pedro Castillo.

Jerí said on Sunday that he does not rule out entering the Mexican diplomatic headquarters to arrest Chávez, accused in his country of alleged corruption. “If it has to be admitted, it will be done,” he said.

The Mexican president replied that the right to asylum is recognized by international conventions and that removing Chávez from the embassy by force would constitute a serious violation.

In April 2024, the president of Ecuador, Daniel Noboa, ordered the entry of military and police forces into the Mexican embassy in Quito to arrest former Vice President Jorge Glas, causing the rupture of bilateral relations.
