The president of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel, reported that at least six people lost their lives as a result of hurricane Oscar passing through the island.
“Emergency in Imías and San Antonio del Sur. According to preliminary data, there are 6 deaths in historically dry land,” he said.
The president asserted that the Army and the Ministry of the Interior are carrying out rescue work in the affected municipalities of the province of Guantánamo, in the east of the country, although some areas remain incommunicado.
Previously, he noted that the municipalities of Baracoa, Maisí and Imías were severely affected by Cyclone Oscar.
According to TASS news agencies, the hurricane made
landfall on the Caribbean island on the night of October 20. The U.S.
National Hurricane Center reported this day that Oscar had
weakened to become a tropical storm, but continued to pose a danger to Cuba
and the Bahamas.
