Some 156 million Brazilians are called to vote for new municipal authorities

This Sunday, October 06, nearly 156 million people will be able to vote in the municipal elections that will take place in 5,569 cities in Brazil.

On this day, the forces of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and former President Jair Bolsonaro will be measured, in which in the 103 municipalities with more than 200,000 voters, a second round will be held on October 27, in the event that none of the candidates for mayor exceeds 50% of the votes.

In addition, the only one of the 27 regional capitals that will not go to the polls is Brasilia, which is part of the Federal District and has a different administrative regime.

In Brazil, each municipality has an autonomous local government, composed of a mayor (prefects) and a legislative body (Municipal Chamber), both offices are elected by universal suffrage and direct vote.

The voting centers opened at 08:00 local time in Brasilia (11.00 GMT) and will be in operation until 17:00 (20.00 GMT), however, voters who are in the ranks will be able to exercise the right to vote.
