The former defense minister of South Korea, Kim Yong-hyun, tried to take his own life in a prison in Seoul, while in prison. After the incident, he was transferred to a special cell.

Kim allegedly tried to hang himself in a bathroom on Tuesday afternoon, but was found in critical condition and taken to a nearby hospital, authorities say.

The former minister resigned last Thursday after being accused of recommending the declaration of martial law last week, a measure that generated the worst public outrage in the country in decades.

President Yoon Suk Yeol issued the controversial decree, after accusing the opposition of planning a rebellion, although he quickly rescinded it after massive protests.
