The attorney general of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Tarek William Saab, reported this Tuesday that 290 people involved in 32 corruption schemes in the national oil industry have been prosecuted, since taking office almost seven years ago.

At a press conference, William Saab said that of the total number of those prosecuted, 76 have been convicted. “Among the defendants are four former presidents of PDVSA. These are Tareck El Aissami, Nelson Martínez, Eulogio Del Pino and Rafael Ramírez,” he recalled.

He stated that of all the plots, PDVSA-Cripto is “the most disgusting, because it combines corruption, political conspiracy and extortion.

He said that the first phase of the investigation into the PDVSA-Cripto plot, which began in March 2023, “closed with 54 detainees who are currently accused,” while in the second phase, Tareck El Aissami, Simón Alejandro Zerpa and Samark José López were arrested.
