The death toll from the fire in a residential building complex in the northeast of the Chinese city of Hong Kong has increased to 128 people, Chinese authorities reported this Friday, November 28, according to the Telesur website.

“According to data from the Hong Kong Fire Department, the number of fatalities in the fire at the Wang Fuk Court residential building complex grew to 128, while another 79 people were injured,” several official media outlets in the Asian country reported.

The Secretary of Security of the Hong Kong region announced to the media that 108 of the bodies were found in the area of the fire and did not rule out that the teams working in the affected buildings will find more bodies in the next few hours.

Last Wednesday, the 26th, a fierce fire destroyed the bamboo scaffolding in several buildings of the Wang Fuk Court residential complex. As a result, all eight caught fire. The accident was described as the worst in the last 17 years.

As of this Friday, at least three people were arrested as suspected perpetrators of a homicide in connection with the fire.

Chinese President Xi Jinping expressed his condolences to the victims and families of those killed in the fire, and called for every effort to put out the flames and minimize casualties.

For its part, the SWI website reported that the anti-corruption agency had already arrested two directors of the architectural firm in charge of renovating the burned residential complex this Friday morning, and then arrested six other people throughout the day, according to the Hong Kong daily South China Morning Post.

The diary details that the suspects are seven men and one woman, between 40 and 63 years old. Among them are two project managers from the architectural firm Will Power Architects; a couple who own a subcontracted company for scaffolding, and an intermediary.

The first two arrested this morning were executives from Will Power Architects, an architectural firm that acted as a consultant for the renovation project of the eight towers that make up the Wang Fuk Court residential complex.
