The Vatican Secretary of State, Pietro Parolin, today expressed his “indignation” at the “massacre” in Gaza and asked to seek “other ways” to resolve the situation, during the commemoration of the Lateran Pacts.
“Other ways must be found to solve the problem in Gaza and Palestine. The Holy See has said it from the beginning: on the one hand, it clearly and unreservedly condemns what happened on October 7,” he said, referring to the attack by the Islamists on Hamas, according to the official website 'Vatican News'.
Parolin issued a clear and unreserved condemnation of all forms of anti-Semitism but at the same time questioned whether Israel invokes the right to defense to justify this operation that has left 30,000 dead on the Palestinian side.
The cardinal asked “not to lose hope” in the search for peace.
“I think we are all outraged by what is happening, by this massacre, but we have to have the courage to continue and not lose hope (...) It is necessary to strive to the end and try as hard as possible to make our contribution,” he said.
Parolín made these statements to the press in commemoration of the 95th anniversary of the Lateran Pacts with Italy, which made the Vatican an independent country, with the presence of the Italian president, Sergio Mattarella, and the Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, among other authorities.
