The capital of the Bolivar state, Ciudad Bolívar, celebrates a new anniversary this Thursday. In 1764 it was founded under the name of Santo Tomás de la Nueva Guiana de la Angostura del Orinoco and renamed in June 1846 as Ciudad Bolivar. It is widely recognized for its beautiful colonial architecture and for having hosted the famous Congress of Angostura.
Initially, this town was called Angostura del Orinoco and it was born after the third move of the old Santo Tomé de Guayana, in 1595, a date that is taken as its true foundation. It was continuously attacked by indigenous warriors and European pirates, and it was definitely installed at the narrowest point of the middle stretch of the Orinoco River, between the current states of Bolívar and Anzoátegui.
In 1846, the then president, Carlos Soublette, ordered the change of name from Angostura del Orinoco to Ciudad Bolivar, which he preserves to this day. This change was intended to honor the memory of the Liberator Simon Bolivar and the importance that this city played in the struggle for continental freedom.
