At the resumption of the judicial process for the death of Diego Armando Maradona, the forensic doctor Federico Corasaniti, in charge of carrying out the autopsy, presented decisive testimony that complicates the situation of the eight health professionals accused.

According to the expert, the Argentine star suffered a prolonged agony of approximately 12 hours before dying on November 25, 2020.

Corasaniti explained that Maradona's body had a “visible generalized edema”, characterized by evident swelling in the face, hands, feet and the accumulation of fluid in the abdomen. According to the expertise, these external signs of heart failure were so evident that any routine medical check would have made it possible to detect that his life was in imminent danger. This revelation contradicts the initial version of a sudden death due to cardiorespiratory arrest.

The current trial takes place after the annulment of a previous trial in 2025, which was invalidated by ethical irregularities on the part of one of the judges. The eight defendants face charges of “simple homicide with possible intent”, on the fiscal thesis that they were aware of the risk of death and omitted the necessary actions to prevent the outcome.

Likewise, the prosecution maintains that Maradona's death was “avoidable” if he had received adequate medical assistance during that period of final deterioration.
