A Turkish Airlines plane suffered a fire in the wheels of its landing gear after contact with the runway at Tribhuvan International Airport in Nepal. Emergency crews immediately activated safety protocols to put out the flames while the aircraft remained on the asphalt. Given the seriousness of the accident, the crew ordered the immediate evacuation of all people on board through emergency ramps.
Airport Security Office spokesman Raj Kumar Silwal confirmed the successful rescue of 276 passengers and 11 crew members. Local firefighters acted quickly and managed to extinguish the fire before it spread to the rest of the fuselage. Fortunately, official reports do not report casualties or serious injuries; therefore, all occupants are safe and sound under the protection of the authorities.
Because the incident occurred on the main runway, Nepal's most important international airport temporarily suspended all of its takeoff and landing operations. The interruption caused massive delays and the diversion of multiple international flights to alternative destinations.
Maintenance crews work on towing the aircraft to the taxiway for detailed inspection. Aviation experts will initiate a comprehensive investigation to determine the mechanical causes that caused the overheating and subsequent fire of the landing gear.
