The President of the Parliament of Türkiye, Numan Kurtulmus, formally requested the suspension of Israel's membership in the United Nations (UN), during the inauguration of the 152nd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union held in Tashkent.

The leader based his request on the fact that the Jewish State applies segregation policies that bear a close resemblance to the apartheid regime that prevailed in South Africa. Kurtulmus stressed that these actions represent a serious deterioration of the international order and demand an immediate response from the multilateral system.

To support his position, the parliamentary incumbent recalled the historic precedent of 1974, the year in which the United Nations decided to suspend South Africa due to its institutionalized racial discrimination practices.

According to Kurtulmus, the current situation in the Palestinian territories has a direct parallel with that scenario, since Israel would be implementing different regulations between citizens according to their origin. The Turkish leader emphasized that the international community must act with the same firmness with which it confronted the South African segregationist regime in the last century.

During his speech, Kurtulmus denounced that Israeli actions not only constitute a manifestation of apartheid, but also represent a campaign of genocide and the imposition of death sentences against the Palestinian people.

The leader questioned the legitimacy of keeping a State within the global body when it ignores the principles of equality and justice that govern international coexistence. In their view, the suspension is the necessary mechanism to curb the application of unequal laws and guarantee respect for fundamental human rights in the region.

The proposal was presented within the framework of the 152nd Assembly of the IPU, a central event for parliamentary diplomacy that takes place under the premise of building peace and justice for future generations.

This meeting, which includes more than 80 events scheduled until next Sunday, serves as a platform for various world leaders to discuss the restructuring of the multilateral system in the face of current conflicts.

The Türkiye declaration adds significant pressure to the global debate on the responsibility of member states to international organizations.
