Typhoon Saudel makes landfall twice in Zhejiang and forces more than 240,000 people to evacuate

Typhoon Saudel, the eighteenth of the season, made landfall twice this Friday morning in the eastern province of Zhejiang, the People's Republic of China. The extreme severity of the torrential rains and strong winds forced regional authorities to immediately declare Level I emergency, the highest alert contemplated in the state disaster management protocol.

The first impact of the meteorological phenomenon occurred at 08:05 (Beijing time) in the coastal district of Yuhuan, recording winds of 35 meters per second. Just an hour later, at 09:10, the storm made its second landing in the city of Wenzhou with gusts of 33 meters per second, consolidating a pattern of double onslaught over the maritime belt.

The magnitude of the rainfall and the imminent risk of flooding prompted the preventive evacuation of approximately 247,700 residents in high-risk areas of neighboring Fujian province. Security forces and rescue forces deployed mass transfer operations to temporary shelters to protect communities exposed to landslides and floods.

For its part, the National Meteorological Center of China predicted that the cyclone system will gradually lose strength as it enters the mainland. Despite the projected decrease in wind intensity, emergency crews remain under constant monitoring for possible river overflows and soil saturation.
