The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI) have announced a reduction in the price of the R21/Matrix-M vaccine against malaria. The agreement will make it possible to have 30 million additional doses and expand coverage to 7 million children by 2030.

The price per dose will be set at $2.99 a year from now. With this adjustment, savings of 90 million dollars are expected, which will facilitate the purchase of more than 30 million doses over the next five years, according to UNICEF.

The reduction in costs has been possible thanks to an advance payment from the Mechanism for the International Funding of Immunization Programmes. This support will expand access to the vaccine in countries that already administer it and in those that have recently started using it.

Currently, 24 countries maintain malaria vaccination as part of their routine programs. Another 14 began to apply it in 2024 and 7 in 2025.

The alliance has distributed more than 40 million doses and expects to immunize 50 million children by the end of the decade.
